By making a few simple changes, you can save water around your home.
Here are a couple of ideas to get you started:
- In the bathroom check your toilet for leaks, place a 2 liter filled bottle in the toilet tank to reduce the water used with each flush, turn off water while brushing your teeth, purchase a water saving showerhead, and add a faucet aerator to the sink faucet.
- In the kitchen make sure your dishwasher is full before running it and use a water saver cycle, use a dishpan or stopper in the sink and keep a pitcher of drinking water in the refrigerator.
- In the laundry room make sure you select the proper water level for each load of laundry and use a dishpan or stopper when cleaning items in the utility sink.
- Outside, mow your lawn in the morning or evening, leaving your lawn height between 3” to 3½“ to increase shade and encourage deeper rooting and to reduce water evaporation. Water thoroughly but infrequently, about 1” to 1 ½” of water per week; letting the grass be “thirsty” encourages deeper rooting. Water on non-windy days early in the morning, use soak irrigation lines instead of pop-up heads, fertilize in the Spring and Fall and plant native warm-season grasses, wildflowers, trees and shrubs which do not need supplemental watering or fertilizer applications.
