Montana Public Service Commission Hires New Executive Director

  • March 04 2025

The Montana Public Service Commission announced today the hiring of its new executive director, Alana Lake.

Lake brings years of management experience to the PSC from her prior service as a commander in the U.S. Air Force Office of Special Investigations, and most recently, at the U.S. Department of Energy’s Idaho National Laboratory.

“I am excited to be joining the staff of the Montana Public Service Commission,” said Lake. “The citizens of Montana deserve the best when it comes to utility service and fulfilling energy needs in a safe and reliable way. It is an honor to be a part of the Commission, which plays an important role in balancing the interests of both utility customers and shareholders.”

The PSC executive director serves as the chief of staff for the Department of Public Service Regulation. Job duties include planning, directing, managing and supervising the day-to-day internal operations of the department; carrying out the adopted plans and policies of the Commission; and overseeing the agency’s public affairs.

The PSC is among the smallest agencies in Montana's state government, employing fewer than 40 full-time staff who are primarily economists, accountants, and attorneys. Lake brings experience managing similar teams of specialists and experts from her time in the U.S. Air Force, where she oversaw felony-level criminal and counterintelligence investigations and cyber threat mitigation.

The Commission regulates private investor-owned natural gas, electric, telephone, water, and sewer companies, certain motor carriers, and oversees natural gas pipeline safety and intrastate railroad safety. The Commission works to ensure that Montanans receive safe and reliable service from regulated public utilities while paying reasonable rates.
